The State Forensic Lab, Hyderabad, has found traces of human liquid in the stolen clothes recovered by the police.
CHANDIGARH: The long spell of silence in the infamous Sector 17 theft case, allegedly involving wife of the then deputy mayor, has turned out to be the lull before another storm. The State Forensic Lab, Hyderabad, has found traces of human liquid in the stolen clothes recovered by the police, and the cops have now decided to go for DNA tests of the two women suspects.
This comes after the forensic lab told UT police that they could develop genetic profile of the persons who might have used the clothes with the help of liquid traces, and the DNAs of the suspects could prove to be a key evidence in the case. "If the suspects' DNA profile matches with that developed by the lab, then our case against them is as good as proved," a top police officer told TOI. The two women, Harneet Singh, wife of Congress leader and former deputy mayor HS Lucky, and her friend Jaspal Bhattal have been claiming they have nothing to do with the theft. Lucky had added it was a "political conspiracy" to malign his reputation.
The sensational and much-publicised case, in which police played a dubious role initially to save the influential accused leading to suspension of two officers, was reported as just another case of theft on April 18, 2006. On the complaint of shop owner Alok Jain, the police had arrested his employee Raju for stealing clothes and recovered stolen garments. The matter, however, took an interesting turn when it was reported that Raju had been lifting clothes from the shop, a woman's wear store, for the two women. The then IG Satish Chandra handed over the probe to the crime branch.
The statement of a guard, who said he saw Raju hand over clothes to a woman in a Skoda car, led to the Crime Branch booking Harneet and Jaspal as co-accused. The Skoda, police said, belonged to Lucky. The call and location details of the accused, which showed Raju was in touch with Harneet and she was in Sector 17 on the fateful morning, further strengthened the evidence against them. Harneet, after being in hiding for long, got anticipatory bail from Punjab and Haryana High Court while a local court had earlier granted bail to Jaspal. But the DNA results could prove to be the last straw for them, police said.
